Lake Pichola, Udaipur (2026): Boat Rides, Jag Mandir, Sunset & Tickets

Lake Pichola, Udaipur: Boat Rides, Islands & Sunsets

The shimmering heart of the City of Lakes, Lake Pichola cradles island palaces, ghats and the famous Lake Palace. Here is how to take a boat ride, where to watch the sunset, and how to plan your visit.

Lake Pichola is the shimmering heart of Udaipur, the "City of Lakes". This artificial freshwater lake, created in 1362 and later expanded by the Mewar rulers, cradles island palaces, lakeside ghats and the city's most iconic views — including the famous Lake Palace floating mid-water.

A boat ride on Pichola at golden hour is the single most magical thing to do in Udaipur. This guide covers the boat rides, the islands of Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace, the Ambrai Ghat sunset, timings, ticket prices and the best time to visit. For more of the city, see our places to visit in Udaipur and things to do in Udaipur guides.

Boat rides on Lake Pichola

Shared motorboats depart through the day from Rameshwar Ghat, inside the City Palace complex, and are the classic way to experience the lake. A standard ride lasts around 30 to 60 minutes and glides past the Lake Palace, the ghats and the City Palace facade, usually with a short stop at Jag Mandir island.

The most coveted slot is the sunset boat ride, which costs more and sells out fast — book early in the day or in advance. Smaller private and shikara-style boats can also be arranged for a more leisurely cruise.

Jag Mandir & the Lake Palace

Jag Mandir is the larger island palace on Pichola, a 17th-century pleasure pavilion of domes, gardens and marble elephants. Boat rides typically stop here, and you can wander the courtyards, enjoy the lake views and have a drink or meal at the island cafe.

Jag Niwas — the Lake Palace — is the dazzling white marble palace that appears to float on the water and is now a luxury heritage hotel (the Taj Lake Palace). It is not open to day visitors and entry is reserved for hotel guests, but it is the lake's most photographed sight, best admired from a boat or the surrounding ghats.

Ambrai Ghat sunset

For the finest free view of Pichola, head to Ambrai Ghat (also called Amet Ki Haveli) on the western shore. As the sun drops, the City Palace, the Lake Palace and the ghats glow gold and are mirrored in the still water — one of India's most romantic scenes.

Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset for a good spot. The adjacent cafes and the lakeside Ambrai restaurant are popular for sundowners, and the view is equally lovely after dark when the palaces are illuminated.

It pairs naturally with the City Palace and the old-city sights — see our places to visit in Udaipur guide.
