Udaipur — the "City of Lakes" in southern Rajasthan — sits in a valley of the Aravalli hills, wrapped around Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar. Its climate is typically Rajasthani: hot summers, a short refreshing monsoon and cool, comfortable winters that draw most visitors.
The best time to visit Udaipur is from September to March, when the monsoon has filled the lakes, the heat has eased and the weather is ideal for sightseeing, boat rides and sunset views. Here is exactly what to expect month by month.
Quick answer — Udaipur by season
September–March (peak / best): Pleasant and dry. Daytime 10–30°C. Ideal for everything — palaces, lake cruises, day trips and weddings. This is the season to plan around.
July–September (monsoon): Light to moderate rain that fills the lakes and turns the Aravallis green. The most atmospheric time to see Udaipur, with lower crowds and softer light — pack a light rain layer.
April–June (summer): Hot and dry, often 38–42°C. Best avoided for daytime sightseeing, but rates drop and early mornings and evenings on the lake are still lovely.
Month-by-month weather
| Months | Weather | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Oct – Feb | Cool & dry, 10–28°C, clear skies | Sightseeing, lake cruises, honeymoon (peak season) |
| Sep & Mar | Warm, pleasant, full lakes | Fewer crowds, shoulder-season value, photography |
| Apr – Jun | Hot & dry, 35–42°C | Lowest rates, early-morning and indoor sightseeing |
| Jul – Aug | Monsoon, lush green, full lakes | Greenery, romantic mood, off-season deals |
Peak season — October to February
This is when Udaipur is at its finest. The monsoon has filled the lakes to the brim, the air is clear, and daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable 20–28°C range with cool, crisp mornings and evenings. It is the perfect time for a sunrise boat ride, a long visit to City Palace and unhurried sunsets — see our things to do in Udaipur guide.
Everything is at its best: the lakes are full, the ghats glow at golden hour, and the city hosts a busy wedding and festival season. December–January nights can dip to around 8–10°C, so carry a light jacket. Because it is peak season, book stays and the better lakeside resorts well in advance.
Monsoon — July to September
Udaipur gets a relatively gentle monsoon compared with much of India, and the rain transforms the city. The lakes fill, the surrounding Aravalli hills turn green, and a soft, misty light settles over the palaces and ghats — many photographers consider this the most beautiful time to visit.
The trade-off is occasional heavy showers and high humidity, and boat rides may pause briefly during downpours. But crowds thin out, hotel rates ease, and the romantic, rain-washed mood makes it a wonderful time for a slower trip. The Hariyali Amavasya and Teej festivals also fall in this green season.
Summer — April to June
Summer in Udaipur is hot and dry, with afternoon temperatures often reaching 38–42°C. It is the least comfortable time for daytime sightseeing, when the sun beats down on the palaces and ghats and lake levels can fall before the rains.
That said, it is the cheapest season, with deep discounts on otherwise pricey lakeside hotels. If you visit in summer, plan sightseeing for early morning and after sunset, keep midday for indoor museums or a cool pool, and enjoy the empty palaces and soft evening light on the water.
What to pack
Oct–Feb: light cottons for the day plus a warm layer or jacket for cool mornings and evenings; comfortable walking shoes.
Jul–Sep: light, breathable clothes, a compact umbrella or rain jacket, and quick-dry footwear.
Apr–Jun: loose cottons, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle for the heat.
