Manjarabad Fort is Sakleshpur's most iconic landmark and one of the first stops on most itineraries in the town. Built by Tipu Sultan around 1792, it is an unusual star-shaped fortress laid out as a perfect eight-pointed star — a design inspired by European Vauban-style military architecture and rarely seen in South India.
Set only about 6 km from Sakleshpur on the Bangalore road, the fort sits on a hilltop at roughly 1,000 metres and rewards visitors with panoramic views over the surrounding Ghats. This guide covers the fort itself, the best time to visit, how to reach it, timings and what else to see nearby. For the wider picture, see our places to visit in Sakleshpur and things to do in Sakleshpur guides.
The star-shaped fort
Manjarabad gets its fame from its geometry. Seen from above, the fort forms a precise eight-pointed star, with the points acting as bastions that could cover every approach. Tipu Sultan used the design to give defenders clear lines of fire in all directions, and it was once part of a chain of forts guarding the route between Mysore and the Malabar coast.
The structure is built largely from granite and brick, with thick ramparts, underground chambers and a central well. There is no grand palace inside — it was a strictly military installation — but walking the star-shaped walls and looking down the pointed bastions gives a real sense of how cleverly the fort was planned.
Best time to visit
Manjarabad Fort is best visited from October to February, the cool, clear post-monsoon and winter months when the skies are bright and the surrounding hills are at their greenest. On a clear day you can see for miles across the Ghats, and the eight-pointed layout is easiest to appreciate from the ramparts.
During the monsoon (June to September) the hilltop is often wrapped in mist, which is atmospheric but can completely hide the views. Early morning or late afternoon are the most comfortable times to climb up, avoiding the midday sun. See our best time to visit Sakleshpur guide for the seasonal overview.
How to reach Manjarabad Fort
Manjarabad Fort is about 6 km from Sakleshpur town, just off the Bangalore–Mangalore highway (NH75). Most visitors come by car, taxi or auto-rickshaw from town, a drive of around 15 minutes, and there is parking near the base of the hill.
From the car park, a flight of stone steps leads up to the entrance — a short but moderately steep climb of a few minutes. Wear sturdy shoes, as the steps can be slippery after rain. The fort is roughly 220 km from Bangalore and 35 km from Hassan for those arriving from further afield.

Views from the ramparts
The reward at the top is the view. Standing on the ramparts, you look out over rolling coffee estates, layered ridgelines and, in the right season, a sea of clouds drifting through the valleys below. It is one of the finest vantage points in the Sakleshpur area and a favourite spot for sunrise and sunset.
The central courtyard and the old well are worth a look, and the bastion points make great spots to take in the panorama and understand the star plan. Carry water, as there are no shops at the top.
What to see nearby
Because the fort is so close to town, it pairs naturally with Sakleshpur's other sights. Combine it with a working coffee and cardamom estate walk, the ancient Sakleshwara Temple in town, or a short hike up Agni Gudda hill for more views.
For a fuller trip, head out to the Bisle Ghat viewpoint or trek to Mookanana Falls. See our places to visit in Sakleshpur guide to map out the route.
