The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa is one of India's most important and most visited churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for holding the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier. Completed in the early 17th century, its weathered laterite facade and richly gilded interior make it a landmark of Goa's Portuguese-era heritage.
A short drive from Panaji, the basilica is the centrepiece of the Churches and Convents of Old Goa. This guide covers its history, the relics of St Francis Xavier, timings, dress code and how to reach it. See also our places to visit in Goa and things to do in Goa guides.
A UNESCO World Heritage church
Built between 1594 and 1605, the Basilica of Bom Jesus — meaning 'Good Jesus' or 'Infant Jesus' — is among the oldest churches in India and a fine example of baroque architecture. In 1986 it was inscribed, with the other churches and convents of Old Goa, on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The exterior is built of exposed laterite stone, its plaster long stripped away, while inside the church is lavishly decorated, with a gilded altar and ornate woodwork. It remains an active place of worship as well as a major monument.
The relics of St Francis Xavier
The basilica's most sacred treasure is the tomb of St Francis Xavier, the 16th-century Jesuit missionary whose body is said to have remained remarkably preserved. His remains lie in an ornate silver casket set on a marble-and-jasper mausoleum, a gift crafted by a Florentine sculptor.
Every ten years or so the relics are brought down for a public Exposition that draws pilgrims from across the world. At other times visitors can view the mausoleum and casket within the church. St Francis Xavier is the patron saint of Goa, and the basilica is the focus of his feast each December.
What to see and nearby Old Goa
Inside, look for the gilded main altar, the elaborate mausoleum of St Francis Xavier and the attached art gallery and museum, which display religious paintings and artefacts. The atmosphere is quiet and reverent, as services are still held here.
The basilica sits within the compact Old Goa heritage zone, so you can easily combine it with the nearby Se Cathedral, the Church of St Francis of Assisi and other monuments on foot. Together they make up the historic capital of Portuguese India.

Practical tips
Dress modestly, keep voices low and switch phones to silent, as the basilica is a working church. Photography rules vary by area, so check the signs and avoid using flash near the relics and altar.
Visit in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat, and allow time to explore the neighbouring Old Goa churches on the same trip. Confirm current timings before you set out, as hours can change around services and feast days.
