Saheliyon Ki Bari, Udaipur (2026): Garden of the Maidens, Fountains, Timings & Tickets

Saheliyon Ki Bari, Udaipur: The Garden of the Maidens

A tranquil 18th-century pleasure garden of marble fountains, lotus pools and shaded pavilions, Saheliyon Ki Bari was built for the queen and her maids. Here is how to plan your visit.

Saheliyon Ki Bari — the "Garden of the Maidens" — is one of Udaipur's most charming retreats, a serene 18th-century pleasure garden laid out with marble fountains, lotus pools, kiosks and shaded walkways in the north of the city. It was built as a tranquil haven where the royal ladies of the court could escape the bustle of palace life.

Famous for its rain fountains that play without any pumps and for the marble elephants and pavilions ringing its central lily pond, the garden is a cool, green contrast to Udaipur's palaces and lakes. This guide covers its history, what to see, timings, tickets and how to reach it. For more of the city, see our places to visit in Udaipur and things to do in Udaipur guides.

A short history of Saheliyon Ki Bari

The garden was laid out in the early 18th century under Maharana Sangram Singh II, who is said to have designed it himself as a gift for the queen and the group of maids who accompanied her — the "saheliyon" who give the garden its name.

The fountains were engineered to run purely on gravity and water pressure, fed by the higher Fateh Sagar Lake nearby, so they play without any mechanical pumps — a clever piece of 18th-century waterworks that still delights visitors today.

What to see in the garden

The fountains: the garden's signature feature is its many marble fountains, including a "rain fountain" pavilion and fountains shaped from black stone, all running on natural water pressure.

The lotus pool: a central pool dotted with lotus and ringed by carved marble elephants spouting water, with a delicate marble kiosk at its heart.

Pavilions and chhatris: shaded marble kiosks and domed chhatris line the lawns, offering cool spots to sit amid the greenery and birdsong.

The small museum: a modest museum near the entrance displays royal curios and a few historical artefacts, a quick stop on the way in or out.
