Jaipur is the perfect base for exploring more of Rajasthan. Within a couple of hours' drive you can spot tigers in a former royal hunting ground, walk down a thousand-year-old stepwell, stand on the ghats of a sacred lake or visit one of India's most famously haunted forts. Many of these spots work as comfortable day trips; a few are better as an overnight.

9 best places to visit near Jaipur
Amer (Amber) — 11 km
Barely outside the city, the village of Amer is home to Jaipur's grandest sight: the magnificent hilltop Amer Fort, with its mirror-work Sheesh Mahal and the Ganesh Pol gate, plus nearby Jaigarh Fort and Maota Lake. An easy half-day from the centre.
Samode — 40 km
A quiet rural retreat north-west of Jaipur known for the opulent Samode Palace and Samode Bagh gardens, and for the surrounding mustard fields and hills. A lovely lunch or overnight escape, and a popular hot-air-balloon launch area.
Abhaneri (Chand Baori stepwell) — 95 km
Home to Chand Baori, one of the deepest and most spectacular stepwells in India, with around 3,500 perfectly geometric steps descending many storeys. The adjacent Harshat Mata temple makes it a memorable, offbeat day trip on the Jaipur–Agra road.
Bhangarh Fort — 85 km
Set in the Aravalli hills, Bhangarh is famous as "India's most haunted place", a ruined 17th-century town of temples, bazaars and a palace. Whatever you make of the legends, it is an atmospheric, photogenic ruin — visit only in daylight, as entry is banned after dark.
Sambhar Lake — 80 km
India's largest inland salt lake, a vast white expanse that draws flamingos and other migratory birds in winter. The salt pans, the toy train, the lakeside temple and the surreal horizon make for striking photography and sunsets.
Pushkar — 145 km
A sacred lakeside town wrapped around the holy Pushkar Lake, with its bathing ghats, one of the world's few Brahma temples and a colourful bazaar. World-famous for its November camel fair, it has a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere year-round.
Ajmer — 130 km
A major pilgrimage city built around the revered Ajmer Sharif Dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Add the historic Ana Sagar Lake, the Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra mosque and Taragarh Fort. Ajmer pairs naturally with neighbouring Pushkar.
Ranthambore National Park — 145 km
One of India's best places to see wild Bengal tigers, set around the dramatic Ranthambore Fort and a string of lakes. Jeep and canter safaris run in the cooler months; this is best done as an overnight rather than a single long day.
Tonk — 100 km
A lesser-known former princely town south of Jaipur, known for its Indo-Islamic architecture, the painted Sunehri Kothi (Golden Mansion) and a notable collection of Arabic and Persian manuscripts. A quiet, offbeat detour for heritage lovers.

How to plan your day trips
The nearest spots — Amer, Samode, Sambhar, Bhangarh and Abhaneri — make easy single-day excursions by car with a driver, which is the most flexible way to explore rural Rajasthan. Ajmer and Pushkar sit close together on the same road and are often combined into one overnight trip, while Ranthambore deserves at least a night so you can fit in early-morning and afternoon safaris.
October to March is the most comfortable season for all of these, with cool days ideal for forts, lakes and wildlife. Start early to beat the heat and crowds, carry water and sun protection, and check opening days and safari booking rules in advance — Ranthambore safaris in particular should be reserved well ahead in peak season.
