Raja's Seat (literally the "Seat of the King") is a small, well-kept garden on the western edge of Madikeri town and the most popular viewpoint in Coorg. Set on a ridge that drops away into a deep, mist-filled valley, it was once where the Kodava rajas and their queens came to relax and watch the sun set over the layered hills — and that remains its main draw today.
Easy to reach on foot or by a short drive from the centre of Madikeri, the garden makes a relaxed end to any day in Coorg. This guide covers the viewpoint and sunset, the garden, the musical fountain and toy train, timings, entry and how to reach it. For the wider picture, see our places to visit in Coorg and things to do in Coorg guides.
The sunset viewpoint
The whole reason Raja's Seat is famous is the view west across the hills. From the low parapet at the edge of the garden, the land falls away into a valley of coffee estates and forest, with ridge after ridge fading into the distance — a scene that turns gold and pink as the sun goes down.
On clear evenings the sunset is genuinely memorable, and the spot fills up well before dusk as visitors claim a place along the railing. Mornings and cloudy days are quieter and still pretty, but it is the evening light that gives Raja's Seat its reputation.
The garden
Behind the viewpoint is a neat ornamental garden with seasonal flower beds, manicured lawns, paved walkways and shaded benches. It is small enough to stroll in twenty minutes and is a favourite spot for families, couples and photographers.
A traditional gazebo-style pavilion sits near the edge, framing the valley behind it and making a popular backdrop for photos. The garden is maintained by the local authorities and is well kept through most of the year.
Musical fountain and toy train
In the evening a small musical fountain show runs near the garden, with coloured water jets set to music — a hit with children and a gentle way to round off the visit after sunset. Show timings are usually after dusk and may change seasonally.
A short toy train also runs on a loop within the complex for a nominal fare, mainly for younger visitors. Both are optional extras alongside the main attraction, which remains the view.

How to reach Raja's Seat
Raja's Seat is right in Madikeri, only about 1 km from the town centre and bus stand. It is an easy, mostly flat walk for those staying nearby, or a five-minute ride by auto-rickshaw or taxi.
There is parking near the entrance for cars and two-wheelers. Because it is so central, it slots in at the end of a day spent at Madikeri Fort, the Omkareshwara Temple or Abbey Falls.
What to see nearby
Raja's Seat sits within easy reach of Madikeri's other sights. Combine it with Madikeri Fort and the Omkareshwara Temple in town, the Raja's Tombs (Gaddige), and Abbey Falls a short drive away.
For a longer day you can add the Mandalpatti viewpoint by jeep before returning for sunset here. See our places to visit in Coorg guide to map out the route.
