Coorg (Kodagu), tucked high in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, has no airport or railway station of its own — so every journey ends with a scenic drive through coffee country. The good news is that it is well connected by road to Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.
This guide covers all the ways to reach Coorg — by road, the nearest airports, the nearest railway stations and local transport once you arrive. Once there, plan your trip with our things to do in Coorg and places to visit in Coorg guides.
By road
Road is the most common and convenient way to reach Coorg, whether by self-drive, taxi or bus. Madikeri, the main town, is the usual hub.
From Bangalore (~245 km, 5.5–6.5 hrs): via Mysore – Hunsur – Kushalnagar – Madikeri. The Bangalore–Mysore expressway is fast, after which the road turns scenic. Frequent KSRTC and private buses run overnight and through the day.
From Mysore (~120 km, 3–3.5 hrs): the shortest and most popular approach, via Hunsur and Kushalnagar. Easy to combine with a Mysore visit.
From Mangalore (~135 km, 3.5–4 hrs): a beautiful Western Ghats drive via Sullia and Madikeri — handy if you fly into Mangalore first.
By air — nearest airports
Mangalore International Airport (~135 km, ~3.5 hrs): the nearest major airport to Madikeri, with good domestic connections and some international flights. A scenic drive follows.
Mysore Airport (~120 km, ~3 hrs): the closest airport but with limited connectivity — useful only if a suitable flight is available.
Kannur International Airport, Kerala (~90 km, ~2.5–3 hrs): increasingly the most convenient option for the southern parts of Coorg (Virajpet, Gonikoppal), with growing domestic and international routes.
Bangalore (Kempegowda) Airport (~265 km, ~6 hrs): the farthest, but the best-connected — many travellers fly here and then drive or take a bus.
By train — nearest railway stations
Mysore Junction (~120 km, ~3 hrs): the most popular railhead for Coorg, well connected to Bangalore, Chennai and other cities, with plenty of taxis and buses onward to Madikeri.
Hassan (~115 km, ~3 hrs): a convenient alternative, especially for the northern side of Coorg, with good connections from Bangalore and Mangalore.
Mangalore (~135 km, ~3.5 hrs): handy if you are travelling along the coast. From any of these stations, complete the journey by taxi or bus.

Local transport in Coorg
Coorg is spread out and hilly, with sights scattered across plantations, so a private vehicle is by far the easiest way to get around. Many visitors self-drive or hire a car with driver for the trip.
Local KSRTC and private buses connect the main towns — Madikeri, Kushalnagar, Virajpet and Gonikoppal — and are cheap, but services to viewpoints and estates are limited. Auto-rickshaws and local taxis are available in Madikeri for short hops and day trips.
For viewpoints like Mandalpatti, you will need a local open jeep, as the rough tracks are off-limits to regular cars. Book these through your resort or at the trailhead.
