Sakleshpur Trekking (2026): Top Treks, Difficulty & Permits

Sakleshpur Trekking: Top Treks, Difficulty & Permits

Sakleshpur is one of Karnataka's great trekking bases, from gentle hill walks to the famous railway-track route and the demanding Ombattu Gudda. Here are the top treks, how hard they are, when to go and what permits you need.

Tucked into the Western Ghats in Karnataka's Hassan district, Sakleshpur is one of South India's favourite trekking bases. Dense shola forest, grassland ridges, hidden waterfalls and an atmospheric disused railway line give it a range of treks — from easy sunrise hills you can climb before breakfast to multi-hour expeditions that test seasoned trekkers.

This guide covers the top Sakleshpur treks, their difficulty, the best season and what you need to know about permits and safety. When you are planning the rest of your trip, see our guides to places to visit in Sakleshpur, things to do in Sakleshpur and the best time to visit Sakleshpur.

Top treks around Sakleshpur

1

Ombattu Gudda

The classic challenge — named for its "nine hills." A demanding, long trek through thick Western Ghats forest, streams and grassland with steep ascents and descents. It is best done as a guided overnight or very early-start trek and is not suitable for beginners. Difficulty: hard. Best season: post-monsoon to winter (October to February) when trails are firmer and views are clear.

2

Green Route railway trek (Donigal)

The legendary walk along a disused stretch of the Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya railway line, usually started near Donigal. The route crosses dozens of bridges and dark tunnels through deep forest, and is moderate in difficulty but long and tiring underfoot. Access and permissions for railway-track walking change frequently and the line has at times been off-limits, so always check current rules and go with a registered local operator. Difficulty: moderate (long). Best season: October to February.

3

Agni Gudda Hill

A short, rewarding hill walk close to Sakleshpur town, perfect for sunrise or sunset. The grassy summit gives sweeping 360-degree views of the valleys, and the climb takes only a couple of hours, making it ideal for families and first-time trekkers. Difficulty: easy to moderate. Best season: year-round, though clearest October to March.

4

Bisle Ghat & reserve forest walks

Around the Bisle Ghat viewpoint, roughly 40 km from Sakleshpur, short forest walks and nature trails wind through the Bisle Reserve Forest, overlooking the meeting of three mountain ranges. These are gentle compared with the big treks but offer superb birdwatching and sea-of-clouds mornings. Difficulty: easy. Best season: post-monsoon for clear views.

5

Mookanana Falls trek

A moderate forest trek of a few kilometres leads to this lesser-known waterfall, which is at its most powerful during and just after the monsoon. The trail can be slippery and indistinct in places, so a local guide is strongly recommended. Difficulty: moderate. Best season: just after the monsoon (September to November).

Difficulty and best season

Sakleshpur's treks span the full range. Agni Gudda and the Bisle Ghat trails are gentle and family-friendly; the Mookanana Falls and Green Route walks are moderate but long; and Ombattu Gudda is a genuinely hard trek for fit, experienced hikers. Choose according to your fitness and the time you have — a casual weekend can fit one easy hike, while a dedicated trekking trip should add a day for a bigger route.

Season matters a great deal. The monsoon (June to September) makes the hills lush and the waterfalls thunder, but trails turn slippery and leeches are common in the forest. The clearest, most comfortable trekking window is October to February, when the air is cool, views open up and paths are firmer. Avoid the harder treks in heavy rain.

Permits, guides and safety tips

Several Sakleshpur treks pass through reserve forest and along railway property, so permissions matter. The Green Route railway-track trek in particular has been restricted at various times for safety reasons, and rules change — never assume it is open, and book through a registered local operator who can arrange any required permits. Forest-department permissions may apply for routes inside the Bisle Reserve Forest.

For safety, always trek with an experienced local guide on the harder routes, start early, and carry enough water, snacks, a basic first-aid kit and a torch (essential for the railway tunnels). Wear good grip shoes, use anti-leech precautions in the wet season, tell your stay where you are going, and turn back if the weather closes in. Mobile signal is patchy in the forest, so do not rely on it.
